Tall Clothing Size Guide — Inseam, Sleeve, and Rise Explained
The complete tall clothing size guide for men and women. Inseam, sleeve length, and rise measurements explained, with size-by-height charts and brand verification.
If you’re tall, “tall” is a meaningless label until you know the actual measurement behind it. This is the reference guide we wish existed when we started shopping — a single source for the numbers that matter, the heights they correspond to, and the brands that genuinely deliver them.

The Two Numbers That Matter Most
Inseam = the length from the crotch seam to the bottom of the pant leg. Sleeve length = the distance from the back center of the neck, across the shoulder, down to the wrist.
Almost every other tall clothing problem (rise, torso length, jacket length) flows downstream from these two. Get inseam and sleeve right, and you’ll have a wardrobe that fits.
Inseam by Height — Men
| Height | Recommended Inseam | Standard “Tall” Hits | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6’0”–6’1” | 32” | 32” (works) | Most regular sizing works |
| 6’2”–6’3” | 34” | 34” (works) | Standard “Tall” sizing kicks in here |
| 6’4”–6’5” | 34”–36” | 32”–34” (short) | Some “Tall” lines run short |
| 6’6”–6’7” | 36”–38” | 34” (short) | Need extended tall (ASOS, J.Crew Tall reach here) |
| 6’8”+ | 38”–40” | 34”–36” (way short) | Need extended tall (American Tall, Wrangler) |
Caveat: Inseam preference varies by style. Slim-cut pants often fit with a slightly shorter inseam (the tapered hem sits naturally above the shoe). Straight-cut pants need to reach the shoe heel. Add 1” for boots over sneakers.
Inseam by Height — Women
| Height | Recommended Inseam | Standard “Tall” Hits | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5’8”–5’9” | 30” | 30” (works) | Most regular sizing works |
| 5’10”–5’11” | 32”–33” | 32” (works) | Standard “Tall” sizing kicks in |
| 6’0”–6’1” | 33”–34” | 32” (short) | Need extended tall |
| 6’2”+ | 35”–36” | 32”–33” (way short) | Need American Tall, Long Tall Sally, or Athleta Tall 36” |
Style adjustments:
- Cropped/ankle styles: subtract 2”–3” from the base inseam.
- Wide-leg/flare: add 0.5”–1” so the hem falls properly.
- Maxi dresses: the relevant measurement is dress length from shoulder, not inseam — see the dress length section below.
Sleeve Length by Height
Sleeve length is trickier than inseam because brands measure it inconsistently. The two common methods:
- Center back method: Measure from the center of the back of the neck, across the shoulder, down to the wrist. This is the standard for dress shirts and jackets.
- Shoulder-to-wrist method: From the shoulder seam to the wrist. Add ~3” to convert from this to center back.
This guide uses the center back method.
| Height | Men Sleeve | Women Sleeve | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5’8”–5’10” | 33”–34” | 30”–31” | Standard sizing works |
| 5’11”–6’1” | 34”–35” | 32”–33” | Some “Tall” labels still run short |
| 6’2”–6’4” | 35”–36” | 33”–34” | Need true tall-spec sleeve |
| 6’5”–6’7” | 36”–37” | 34”–35” | Limited off-the-rack options; specialty brands required |
| 6’8”+ | 37”–38”+ | 35”–36”+ | Made-to-measure (Indochino, Proper Cloth) or American Tall |
The sleeve test: When standing with arms relaxed at your sides, the sleeve hem of a long-sleeve shirt should hit the wrist bone or 0.5” below. For a jacket, the sleeve should end with 0.5” of shirt cuff showing.
Rise — The Quiet Killer
Rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband. Standard rise is engineered for a torso of about 5’10”–6’0”. On a 6’4” frame with a long torso, a standard rise lands at the hip rather than the natural waist, causing:
- Pants gapping at the back
- Top hems exposing the lower back
- Belt sitting on the hip instead of the waist
Recommended rise by torso length:
| Build | Recommended Rise (Men) | Recommended Rise (Women) |
|---|---|---|
| Short torso (rare in tall people) | 9”–10” | 8”–9” |
| Standard torso | 10”–11” | 9”–10” |
| Long torso | 11”–13” | 10”–12” |
Most tall people have a longer-than-average torso. Brands that explicitly extend the rise alongside the inseam — American Tall, Athleta Tall, Bonobos Tall, lululemon Tall — solve this. Brands that only extend inseam don’t.
Dress Length for Tall Women
The maxi dress test is brutal. A standard maxi is patterned for a 5’7”–5’8” woman. On a 6’0” woman, the same dress hits mid-calf and is no longer a maxi.
| Style | Standard Length | Tall-Spec Length |
|---|---|---|
| Midi dress | 28”–32” from waist | 31”–34” from waist |
| Maxi dress | 50”–54” from shoulder | 56”–62” from shoulder |
| Full-length gown | 56”–60” from shoulder | 62”–68” from shoulder |
Long Tall Sally is the standout brand for dresses built genuinely for women 6’0”+. American Tall and ASOS Tall both have shorter ceilings but cover the 5’10”–6’1” range well.
Top Length — Tanks, Tees, and Shirts
The “shirt rides up” problem is a long-torso problem more than an inseam problem. Standard tops are 25”–27” from shoulder to hem. Tall-spec tops add 2”–4”.
| Top type | Standard Length | Tall-Spec Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| T-shirt/tank | 26”–28” | 30”–32” | Tucks in cleanly; doesn’t ride up |
| Sweatshirt/hoodie | 27”–29” | 31”–33” | Hem hits at hip, not above |
| Dress shirt (men) | 30”–32” | 33”–36” | Long enough to tuck reliably |
| Button-down (women) | 27”–29” | 31”–34” | Long enough to wear untucked |
How to Measure Yourself
You need:
- A soft cloth measuring tape
- A friend (most measurements can’t be done solo accurately)
- A flat surface to stand on, against a wall
For inseam: Stand against a wall in socks. Place a hardcover book between your legs, pulled snug against the crotch. Mark the wall at the top of the book. Measure from the floor to that mark. That’s your inseam.
For sleeve length (center back method): With arms relaxed at your sides, have someone measure from the center of the back of your neck (the bony bump at the top of the spine), across the shoulder, down the outside of the arm, to the wrist bone.
For rise: Take a well-fitting pair of pants. Measure from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband. That’s the rise. Compare to the chart above.
For torso length: From the bony bump at the back of the neck, down the spine, to the natural waist (the narrowest point of your torso, usually at or above the belly button). Compare to height — torso-to-height ratio above 30% means you’re long-torsoed.

Final Note on Brand “Tall” Labels
A brand calling something “tall” without specifying the inseam in inches is a red flag. The reliable brands publish exact measurements on every product page. If a “tall” listing doesn’t tell you the inseam number, assume it’s 32” or 33” and shop elsewhere.
Every brand recommended in Built Tall’s guides has been verified for the measurements it claims.
